Readers Workshop                    Math Enrichment                        Project Alert.

Readers Workshop

One twelve-week rotation in Discovery is Readers Workshop.  During this time, students will learn new strategies for reading different kinds of materials: textbooks, tests, novels, poetry, essays, magazines and nonfiction books.  Students will experience new books that are appropriate to their individual reading levels.

The Readers' Workshop will be divided into 20-minute segments of Informal Reading Instruction and Formal Reading Instruction.  Mini-lessons will be used in the areas of "Management", "Strategy", and "Formal Reading Lessons".

Examples of "Management" mini-lessons are: book-tasting, rules and routines for Readers' Workshop, keeping a reading log, abandoning books, and book-talks.

Examples of "Strategy" mini-lessons are: why good readers have a plan when they read, what to do when you encounter a work you do not know, finding known word parts or roots, point of view of the text, how an author captures a reader's attention, and personal connections to the text.

Examples of "Formal Reading Lessons" are: reading assessment (SRI), organization, time management, main idea of nonfiction, main idea of fiction, library research, technology, summarization, graphic organizers, reading maps and reference material, and post reading assessments.
