Simile - a comparison between two unlike things using the words “like” or “as”. (Ex. Her voice was like thunder.)


Metaphor - a comparison between two unlike things without using the words “like” or “as”. (Ex. The snow blanketed the meadow.)


Personification - giving human qualities to an inanimate object. (Ex. The sun smiled down on us as we walked the gravel road.)


Hyperbole - exaggeration. (Ex. She must have called twelve thousand times.)


Onomatopoeia - the sound of the word echoes the meaning of the word. (Ex. The snake slithered across the grass.)


Alliteration - a repetitive consonant sound. (Ex. Chuck E. Cheese chewed Chicklets with Chelsea.)


Assonance - a repetitive vowel sound. (Ex. Jack asked Ally to pass the apple.)


Meter - the pattern of beats per line in a poem.


Free Verse - a poem that is free from meter.


Tone - the attitude that the author takes toward the subject.


Rhyme - a correspondence of sounds in words.


Iambic Foot - one unaccented syllable followed by an accented one.
