The following is the basic format for writing a five-paragraph essay.  This is a MAP skill and a district assessment skill. 
 
Paragraph 1: Introduction
Introduce the topic in the first 2-3 sentences.
Relate thesis statement (what you will try to show through the paper)
Follow the thesis statement with a sentence which includes three points you will make to demonstrate your thesis.
 
Paragraph 2: Body Paragraph
Restate the first of your three points.
Use details and facts to back up your point (3-4 sentences).
 
Paragraph 3: Body Paragraph
Restate the second of your three points.
Use details and facts to back up your point (3-4 sentences).
 
Paragraph 4: Body Paragraph
Restate the third of your three points.
Use details and facts to back up your point (3-4 sentences).
 
Paragraph 5: Conclusion
Restate the thesis.
Write your conclusion, showing that, based on the facts and details, you have demonstrated your thesis.
