The following is the basic format for writing a five-paragraph essay. This is a MAP skill and a district assessment skill.

 

Paragraph 1: Introduction

Introduce the topic in the first two or three sentences.

Relate thesis sentence (what you will demonstrate through the paper).

Follow the thesis statement with a sentence which includes three points that you will make to demonstrate your thesis.

 

Paragraph 2: Body Paragraph

Restate the first of your three points.

Use details and facts to back up your point (3-4 sentences).

 

Paragraph 3: Body Paragraph

Restate the second of your three points.

Use details and facts to back up your point (3-4 sentences).

 

Paragraph 4: Body Paragraph

Restate the third of your three points.

Use details and facts to back up your point (3-4 sentences).

 

Paragraph 5: Conclusion

Restate your thesis.

Write your conclusion, showing that, based on the facts and details, you have demonstrated your thesis.
