Your reflection letters are a look back on your year of writing. You should write about your progress this year, what you can do well, what you cannot do so well, talents you have discovered in yourself, and any other thoughts about your writing. The first half-page or page of this letter should talk about you as a writer.
You should look through your permanent writing folders and review everything you have written this year. There are some areas that you should address as well. In your writing, you should find examples of beauty and power, variety and versatility, craft and care, and thoughtful reflection.
Beauty and Power – Find something in your writing that uses beautiful language or expresses a powerful thought or feeling. How did you come up with this in your writing? How did you express your thoughts in words so well?
Variety and Versatility – If you showed variety, you attempted different things (poetry, prose, essays, etc.). If you showed versatility, you did different things well.
Craft and Care – Tell how you turned a kernel thought into a refined piece of writing. What was the process and how did you revise and refine? What things worked for you in your revision?
Thoughtful Reflection – Look back on what you did this year and find examples of your thinking (this letter or your reader response journals). How did you include deep thoughts in your writing? Was reading a stimulus for the depth of your thoughts? What else can you say about the thinking shown in your writing?
