Students have a choice of six projects. Each project will require reading the textbook sections on Europe during Medieval and Renaissance times.
Project One: Scrapbook
Assemble a scrapbook of Medieval life. There are many aspects of Medieval life that were very different from the way we live today. The clothing, living conditions, housing, work, art, architecture, family structure, etc. were original to the time. You should assemble a visual guide to the times. In both pictures and your own words, create a scrapbook that will familiarize someone with the Medieval period.
Project Two: Crusades
Examine the land won and lost, the military strategy used, cities sacked and resurrected, leaders elevated to power and weapons used during the Crusades. Show how these wars were important in shaping the Middle Ages.
Project Three: Art and Architecture
Report on the advancements of art and architecture in the Middle Ages. While many once thought that the Middle Ages were devoid of any advancement in art and architecture, there were many highlights. Piece together a historical development of the art and architecture of the time.
Project Four: Life on the Manor
Feudalism was a huge part of life in the Middle Ages. The manor was the focal point of that life. Show what life was like on the manor. Build a game like "Sim Manor" or the like, showing how the manor grew and prospered and what alliances it had to make for survival. Tell about who lived on the manor and what their roles were.
Project Five: Feudalism Game
The objective of this assignment is to learn as much as possible about Feudalism and Medieval manors. Students should know the Feudal Pyramid (king, nobles, serfs, etc.). They should know the workings of the manor and the division of labor. They should be familiar with what life was like in Medieval times in a feudal society.
After doing reading and research, students will create a game that will demonstrate their knowledge of Feudalism during Medieval times. The game can take the form of a board game, strategy game, game of conflict or anything else that incorporates the information learned.
The game should look as professional as possible, including relevant information about Feudalism, have a game strategy, and be fun. A short essay should be turned in explaining how the game is played and listing the rules of the game.
Project Six: Castle
During Medieval times, kings often financed the construction of castles in outposts that were crucial to the kingdom. As time went on, castles became more and more sophisticated and defensible.
Students will construct a three-dimensional castle that would withstand an enemy attack. The following methods of attack should be taken into account: fire, siege, forced entry, and climbing over the walls. The weaponry of the day should be considered when constructing defenses.
An essay should accompany the castle, telling about the military conflict and the defenses built in to the castle against attack.
